Autumn 2 in Year 3 Turtles

Have a lovely October Half Term! I look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 3rd November for the start of Autumn 2! 🎃

Autumn 1 in Year 3 Turtles

Please see below for what Year 3 have been up to in Autumn 1

As we come to the end of Autumn 1, I wanted to say how proud I am of all the hard work, enthusiasm, and positive attitudes you have shown in Year 3 so far.

In Maths, you have worked hard to develop your number sense skills, explored place value, and learnt how to read and create graphs. In English, we enjoyed reading ‘The Stone Age Boy’ and used it as inspiration to write our own fantastic stories. I have been so impressed with your creativity and imagination.

In History, we travelled back in time to learn about life from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, discovering how people lived and how life changed over thousands of years. You also started to create some wonderful cave painting-inspired artwork, showing great attention to detail and creativity.

In Science, you became geologists by learning about rocks and fossils. One of the highlights was learning our fun song about the different layers of the Earth, which helped us remember the different layers, as well as doing not one but two experiments.

In PE, you have demonstrated excellent teamwork and a positive attitude while developing a range of new skills. It has been wonderful to see you encouraging and supporting one another.

In Music, many of you played the keyboard and recorder for the very first time. You have shown determination and resilience while learning these new instruments, and I have enjoyed hearing your progress each week. We have also begun learning French, and you have embraced this new language with enthusiasm and confidence.

This half term has also been full of exciting experiences beyond the classroom. We have enjoyed special assemblies that have helped us reflect, celebrate achievements, and learn new things together – including a trip from Olympic Athlete Amy Smith. Our trip has brought our learning to life and given us opportunities enjoy music with friends. You represented the school brilliantly, showing excellent behaviour, curiosity, and respect.

Thank you for all your hard work this half term. You should be very proud of everything you have achieved. I hope you have a wonderful break, and I look forward to seeing what amazing things you will accomplish in Autumn 2!

Well done, Year 3! Keep up the fantastic work!

Miss Evans 🌟🎃

Maths –

wc 19.10 – In maths this week, we have finished our topic about graphs. The children have collected, interpreted data using a range of different charts and tables. It was only a short topic and the children have done well to keep up and stay motivated in the last week of Autumn 1. Well done Turtles!

wc 12.10 – This week in maths the children have started a new topic. We have started to consider graphs. They have also worked incredibly hard to complete their first set of maths assessments. They did a reasoning paper and an arithmetic paper. I was so impressed with the children as they demonstrated incredible determination and perseverance.

wc 05.10 – The children have been continuing to explore 3-digit numbers. We spent a couple of lessons rounding and then applied knowledge to word problems. Next week, we will complete a post unit quiz and then begin a new topic.

wc 28.09 – This week, we have started a new topic focusing on number sense. We have considered partitioning numbers and also ordering and comparing 3-digit numbers. The children used the dienes explore different 3-digit numbers.

wc 21.09 – In Maths this week, we have explored of strategies to add two two-digit numbers. We have considered the round and adjust strategy, the near doubles strategy and the adding on to find the difference strategy. We have also used bar models to help us understand some word problems. Year 3 have worked really hard to finish the first year 3 unit and everybody did a great job on their end of unit quiz.

wc 14.09 – This week began with a quick consolidation and recap of learning last week. The children worked in pairs and made some beautiful posters to share their ideas. When then did some work on partitioning numbers which helped when we started adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with and without regrouping. We then considered the ‘make ten’ strategy to add and subtract numbers with regrouping. With lots of practice we will be able to do this easily. Well done children.

wc 31.08 & 07.09 – To start the year, we did an ‘all about me’ maths sheet! Was lovely to see the children take care in their first bit of work. We then revisited some Year 2 learning and did some number bond work and then recognising two-digit numbers. Amazing work!

English –

wc 19.10 – This week, the children spent some time editing their work based on my feedback. We then created some front covers for our stories and shared our stories with each other. Fantastic work children. Well done.

wc 12.10 – In English this week the children have been finalising their stories. They have written their openings, build up, dilemma, resolutions and endings. It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic to keep writing and some of them were even editing their work as they wrote. Amazing effort children.

wc 05.10 – Following on from the planning lessons last week, this week the children were writing their own stories. They wrote a section and then would edit that section before writing the next one. It was amazing to read the children’s stories and see what they changed and seeing what features they used to keep the reader hooked. The children did an amazing job writing their own stories – keep up the good work Turtles.

wc 28.09 – This week the children have been planning their own version of ‘The Stone Age Boy’ story. We used a story mountain and considered what we could change to make our own stories.

wc 21.09 – In English, we have been exploring using adjectives to write descriptions. The children have written some lovely descriptions of caves. We then explored using inverted commas for direct speech and even learnt a little song to help us remember. Then we considered story features used in the Stone Age Boy story in preparation to write our own stories next week.

wc 14.09 – Another busy week in English this week. The children have planned a debate, considering reason for and reasons against living in the Stone Age. We then went to the call and had a class debate where children were able to argue both sides of the argument – they made some excellent points! We then moved away from the Stone Age Boy, for now, and considered persuasive speeches linking to choosing our Year 3 Turtles School Councillors. Great work this week Turtles!

wc 07.09 – This week in English, we have introduced our class text, ‘The Stone Age Boy’ (written by Satoshi Kitamura). Before reading the book, the children made predictions and inferences about what they think might happen in the book based on the front cover. The children then listened carefully to the story as the boy falls into the Stone Age and back again. They began using a thesaurus to upskill their vocabulary when describing a page from the book and we even had time to do some freeze frames in a drama lesson linked to our story! What a busy first week – keep up the hard work.

wc 31.08 – It was lovely to hear about and then read what the children did over the Summer Holidays! They drew their summer in snapshots and then wrote sentences about their holidays, sounded like the children (and parents/carers) had a very busy summer!

Spellings

wc 19.10 – Another prefix in spellings this week. In this week the children looked at the prefix ‘trans-’ and how this can add a sense of ‘across’ or ‘beyond or through’.

wc 12.10 – This week in spellings we focused on the prefix ‘de-’ and how this prefix also gives the meaning of ‘removing, reversing or reducing’.

wc 05.10 – The root word ‘port’ was explored this week. The children considered the meaning of the root word and how adding prefixes and suffixes changed the words.

wc 28.09 – In our spellings sessions this week the children considered a new suffix. The children added the suffix ‘-ous’ to different root words and we discussed the meaning of the words.

wc 21.09 – This week’s spellings session focused on the alphabet. The order of the alphabet and explored lower- and upper-case letters.

wc 14.09 – During spellings this week, the children were learning all about vowels and consonants.

wc 07.09 – For our first week of spellings lessons, the children were introduced to morphology. Morphology helps us to understand how words are created and how their meanings can be changed but putting different pieces together.

Eastlands Primary School have started using Grammarsaurus to teach spellings. The aim to teach three spellings lessons a week as this will help widen the children’s vocabulary and spelling ability.

Reading

wc 19.10 – The children have been working hard to meet their reading targets. Lots of effort has been put into reading this half term, I cannot wait to see what the children go onto read next term.

wc 12.10 – This week, we did some comprehension questions verbally together. I read the text to the children and they discussed the answers with their partners.

wc 05.10 – The children have been continuing to impress me with their enthusiasm to quiz. It is wonderful to listen to the children reading and see the improvement.

wc 28.09 – During reading this week, the children read a text called, ‘How to be a Superhero’. The children read the text and it was wonderful to see children volunteer to read to the class. Amazing effort children.

wc 07.09 & 14.09 – The children have been working hard to quiz these past two weeks. It has been lovely to see the children reading beautifully after break and sharing their books with each other.

wc 31.08 – Wow! The enthusiasm for taking the Star Reading Test was refreshing! Every child tried their hardest to ace the star reading quiz. We then chose books based on the right level and even went to the library.

Science –

wc 19.10 – This week in Science the children explored the process of ‘fossilisation’. We spoke through the steps of how fossils are formed and learnt that they only happen under certain conditions.

wc 12.10 – In Science this week we did another experiment. We were investigating if soil is permeable (which means water and gas can pass through it). We used different equipment including beakers, funnels, filter paper, timers and soil and water to carry out our investigation. The children wrote an explanation of the experiment, including a prediction, and then wrote conclusions too.

wc 28.09 – This week, the children considered the question, ‘What rocks and soils make up the Earth?’. After discussing, the children produced their own diagrams to explain what rocks and soils the Earth is made of.

wc 21.09 – In Science this week, the children explored the Rock Cycle. We discussed the three different types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks) and then we learnt how rocks are formed over millions of years.

wc 14.09 – An investigate this week… we were considering which type of rocks would be good for different things. The investigation we did was to see which type of rock would be good for a roof – slate, a nonpermeable rock, was the winner! Good investigating Turtles.

wc 07.09 – We have begun our Science topic all about Rocks and Soils. The first lesson made children consider what we already knew about different rock and soils and what we might like to find out! We also sorted some rocks into different groups.

Theme (History) –

wc 19.10 – The Stone Age moving into the Bronze Age was the focus of History this week. Eastlands Primary School were celebrating Black History Month this week too, so Year 3 also spent some time learning about Influential Black Musicians. We listened to some music and the children completed a thinking frame to help them organise their new knowledge. We also did an orienteering activity to refresh our memory about Rosa Parks. As always, the children asked some great questions and were incredibly enthusiastic.

wc 28.09 – This week in History, the children were finding out more about early humans and were introduced to the Palaeolithic Period. The children had a picture from an excavation of a cave. They had to look careful and decide what was true and what was false using the evidence in the picture.

wc 21.09 – No History this week due to our Gold Coin Reward afternoon.

wc 07.09 & 14.09 – In History, our new topic has been introduced. This half term we are learning all about the Stone Age. wc 21.09 – In our first RE and Worldviews lesson, the children have considered what a Worldview is. They then completed their own mirror, they had to draw themselves and also consider what things should go around and inside the mirror, because they are a big part of the children’s lives. It was wonderful to see some beautifully presented work and also find out even more about my class!
